Niche & Columbarium FAQs
What is a cremation niche?
A cremation niche is a secure, above-ground space designed to hold urns containing cremated remains. Typically located in columbaria, mausoleums or memorial walls, niches offer a respectful and space-efficient alternative to traditional burials.
What makes Biondan Thin-Niches different?
Our patented Thin-Niche system is only 4 inches deep, allowing it to be mounted on almost any indoor or outdoor wall. Unlike bulky columbaria or traditional mausoleum crypts, Thin-Niches are modular, space-saving, and fast to install – ideal for cemeteries facing space shortages or adapting to increased cremation rates.
Why should a crematorium or cemetery consider these niches?
Maximise unused wall space indoors or out
Avoid costly new builds or renovations
Offer premium or budget options, depending on location and clientele
Adapt quickly to the UK’s rising cremation demand
Improve ROI on prime mausoleum walls
How deep are the thin-niches and what size urns do they hold?
Each niche is 4 inches deep and accommodates up to 300 cubic inches, which suits the vast majority of standard cremation urns.
Can the niches be customised to match existing architecture?
Absolutely. Niches are available with stone, bronze, Kosmolux™, or custom wood shutters – allowing you to match modern, traditional, or even heritage-listed settings. You can also add photo ceramics, bronze lettering, vases, and vigil lights to elevate presentation.
How are the urns supplied?
Each niche comes with a standard plastic urn included. For a more premium offering, Kosmolux™ urns are available in a range of finishes. Crematoria can choose to include upgrades or offer them to families as add-ons.
Can I create different price points for different areas?
Yes. This is one of the strengths of the Thin-Niche system. Less desirable areas (e.g., behind buildings or in older sections) can offer cost-effective options, while high-visibility or premium spots can command higher fees with custom finishes and accessories.
What kind of maintenance does the system require?
The Thin-Niche system is low maintenance by design. All materials are weatherproof, durable, and modular – meaning individual niches or shutters can be easily replaced if damaged.
Can the system be retrofitted to existing buildings?
Yes. That’s one of the core benefits. Thin-Niches can be installed on nearly any wall – even in mausoleums or chapels that were never designed for cremation niches. This makes it ideal for upgrading older sites
Is planning permission required in the UK?
In most cases, installations within existing cemeteries or crematoria do not require full planning permission – especially if no foundations are laid. However, it’s always best to check with your local council for confirmation, particularly for Grade-listed properties.
How fast can the system be installed?
Because of its modular design, a full wall of niches can be installed in days, not weeks. This rapid deployment means minimal disruption to services and faster return on investment.

What types of cremation niches does Biondan offer?
We supply a full range of above-ground cremation niche systems, including:
Traditional modular niches for mausoleum or new construction
INOX stainless-steel framed niches for heavy-duty or coastal environments
Thin-Niches – patented ultra-slim systems for wall-mounting on almost any structure
Each system is designed for long-term durability, easy memorialisation, and maximum space efficiency.
What urn types are compatible with your niches?
Most Biondan niches are designed to accommodate standard UK cremation urns (200–300 cu. in.). We also offer:
Kosmolux™ decorative urns (for premium niches)
Standard plastic urns (included by default for practical installations)
Larger modular niches can accommodate companion urns or custom containers.
Can these niches be used for companion (two-person) interments?
Yes. Many of our traditional niches are sized for double interment, especially in modular systems or mausoleum units. Thin-Niches are typically single capacity due to depth constraints.
Are your niches compliant with UK cremation regulations?
Yes. All Biondan niches meet or exceed typical UK standards for above-ground cremation interments. However, local councils or cemetery trusts may have additional aesthetic or structural guidelines, so we assist in reviewing those as part of any proposal.
How weatherproof are your systems?
Extremely. Our INOX niches are built with marine-grade stainless steel, making them ideal for coastal UK environments. All shutters and structural elements (including Kosmolux™ and bronze) are built for long-term exposure to rain, frost, and sunlight.
Can we install niches on an existing chapel, wall, or outbuilding?
Yes. Thin-Niches are ideal for this use, but modular and INOX systems can also be installed freestanding or partially integrated into existing spaces. We provide site assessments and layout planning to ensure structural compatibility and aesthetic integration.
How secure are the niches?
All niche systems come with secure, tamper-resistant shutter closures. Optional features include:
Bronze lettering (either surface or embedded)
Memorial vases or lights
Photo ceramics
Lockable or sealed compartments
Do you provide installation support?
Yes. We offer full guidance and support for:
Installation and assembly
Fixings and fasteners for different wall types
Custom configurations
Ongoing maintenance plans
What if a niche or shutter is damaged?
All components are modular and replaceable. Shutters can be removed and repaired or replaced without disturbing adjacent niches, and we maintain stock for rapid replacements.
Can we install these without interrupting our daily operations?
Absolutely. Installations can be completed in phases with minimal disruption. Thin-Niches are especially fast to deploy—a full memorial wall can often be completed within a few days.
What’s the typical return on investment for niche systems?
While each site is different, Thin-Niche and modular niche systems enable you to:
Monetise previously unusable space
Offer high-demand cremation alternatives
Earn revenue with little to no ongoing cost
Typical payback can be achieved within 12–18 months, depending on location, pricing, and uptake.
